Non western travelers to Japan were fascinated with the shrines they found traveling to Japan as we can see from looking at this 100+ year old albumen photo (above) from our archives by an unknown photographer. The Japanese themselves are also fascinated with their religious shrines as well, we learn that from this bi-lingual colorful tourist brochure (below) which might date back to the 1930’s or so. Nothing seems to have changed much when we look at the photo in the brochure (last photo) where we see a small picture of the shrine.
