What is the fascination with those ruins, Pompei! Pompei, the Italian city discovered in the 19th Century after some 2000 years of being covered by volcanic ashes and debris always comes back to life when I find old Albumen photos dating back to the 1870’s or so.

In this case, they are done by an unknown photographer. The sink in the top photo looks like a retro-styled Restorations Hardware pedestal sink. The tables in the pictures do not look all that far removed from the more opulent Italianate outdoor or indoor furnishings so popular in those majestic English country homes in the 18th century.

Those lions below, well those lions probably scared some pagan thieves during the dark nights when they tried to remove the left-over BBQ bits, I suppose.
