Here is something interesting in my opinion:Tthe above image, a woodcut made in 1929 is featured as a record sleeve on the 1985 Mick Jagger album “She is the Boss”. The woodcut is dated 1929 and featured as plate 56 in the first wordless graphic novel God’s Man published in the USA in 1929. Below is a youtube video of the song She’s The Boss provided to us by Warner Music Group.
God’s Man was designed and illustrated by the American artist Lynd Kendall Ward (1905-1985). The illustration was perhaps used as a tribute by Jagger or the art director of this album to this fabulous artist and writer, who illustrated over 200 books during his career.
Ward had been strongly influenced by the Belgian artist Frans Masereel whose woodcut illustrations were very popular in the 1920’s, when Ward studied the book arts in Leipzig, Germany. The Fitchburg Art Museum in Fitchburg, Massachusetts recently featured Lynd Ward in an exhibition.
