We are not sure what came first, Paul Anka’s song about THE PAINTER, or Andy Warhol’s idea to do this 1976 record album cover, appropriately called PAUL ANKA, THE PAINTER. The text of the song is as follows:

The painter paints away the day

As he paints his life away

Will he rise in judgement’s eyes or fall

What a humble life he lives

He never sees the price they give

Another part of his soul upon the wall

CHORUS:

Like a lonely soldier faces

Foreign shores and empty spaces

Such is he who strokes to free his soul

Isolation steeped in sadness

Mellowed by the fears of madness

There he stands as he commands control

Deeper than the eye can see

Another man’s philosophy

While he lives the price they give is small

CHORUS: Repeat

When he dies and on that day

The sky’s as high a price they’ll pay

While he lives the price they give is small

While he lives the price they give is small
