Paul Rand (1914-1996) icon of American graphic design, put everything he was known for into this 1958 book cover, a first Vintage Paperback Edition.
Paul Rand demonstrates how simplicity is achieved with the restricting and balancing use of color, the calligraphy drawing the eye into the general view and making you want to read more, as well as, the cut up photograph intriguing us more than a full picture could do.
Paul Rand’s website shows us many more examples of excellent design. “Simplicity is not the goal. It is the by-product of a good idea and modest expectations.” This quote is from the Paul Rand website.
Our previous post on another Mencken book cover last year is here.
